SUMMARY:

This dissertation aimed to study and compare the power and sociability networks of two
royal officials who worked in Rio de Janeiro in the 18th century, at a time when the captaincy
stood out in relation to the other overseas territories of the Portuguese Empire. The first royal
representative was Gomes Freire de Andrada, who served as governor of the captaincy from
approximately 1733 to 1763. The second individual, D. Antônio Álvares da Cunha, was present
in Rio de Janeiro between 1763 and 1767, serving as viceroy, in the scenario after the transfer
of the capital. In this context of colonial governance, both built and integrated networks of
power and sociability, which motivated the investigation to map these networks, seeking to
understand how these relationships were used as governmental tools, and finally compare them
in the different administrations based on Niccolò Machiavelli's concepts of the fox and the lion3
