SUMMARY:

The following research aims to analyze the narratives about Don Hernando Ixtlilxochitl II in some letters and chronicles written during and after the conquest of Tenochtitlan, in the 16th and 17th centuries. In these manuscripts, produced by Spaniards, indigenous people and their descendants, we find different accounts of the same episode: the arrival of the Spaniards in the Valley of Mexico and the capture of Tenochtitlan. In some of these texts, it is reported that Ixtlilxochitl II was one of Cortez's great indigenous allies in the fight against the Mexica, while in others the character is not even mentioned. Based on these texts, we will use the Discourse Analysis methodology to investigate the different representations and silencing of Ixtlilxochitl II in the sources. Together, we will use as a basis the debates about the notion of representation, present in texts by Roger Chartier and François Hartog, and of silencing, discussed by Michel-Rolph Trouillot, for the analysis.  Based on these reflections, our main objective is to investigate how Ixtlilxochitl II was represented and silenced in different narratives, although they all have the same event as their backdrop. In this way, we will be able to observe how different accounts construct discourses with more or less emphasis on groups and individuals participating in the wars of conquest during the years 1519 to 1521. In the meantime, these disputes make clear the conflict at the time about who were or were not the conquerors. Thus, the research contributes to the “New History of the Conquest” by analyzing the protagonism of an indigenous person in sources that have already been extensively studied, but to date these narratives have not attracted much attention in the historiography of the conquest of Tenochtitlan.
