SUMMARY:

This research presents discussions about the movement of cangaceiros on the borders of Ceará
and the discursive construction of fear elaborated by the local press and that of neighboring
states between 1912 and 1928. When studying the discourses about these individuals, we
come across descriptions that highlight their audacity, violence and cruelty of their actions.
Many works have focused on commenting on their actions, but the space where they took
place has not received due attention and, in some cases, has been normalized and understood
as something given. Our proposal is to break away from the normalization of these spaces by
viewing them as sites of power, actively shaping discourses and identities. We focus on the
particularities, the uses of border spaces, and the strategies adopted in the repression of
banditry as described in newspapers. The discourses found in the printed material pointed to a
continuous terror that threatened property and lives, fueled by movement across border
spaces. The discourses present in the printed material pointed to continuous terror that
threatened property and lives, fueled by movement across border spaces. Thus, this study
aimed to understand the discourses of fear disseminated by the press and to discuss how fear
was mobilized to serve interests and spatial uses, discursively (re)constructing practices and
subjects. For this research, we selected newspapers from Ceará and neighboring states, as well
as messages from state presidents to the Assembly between 1910 and 1920. This allowed us
to map the urgency that the issue gained in the 1920s and to analyze the various discourses
that pointed to a threat of invasion and destruction in cities, thus considering a spatialization
of fear based on the displacement of cangaceiros across borders and the multiple possibilities
they offered.
