SUMMARY:
This thesis seeks to understand the process of construction of the sainthood of Catherine Benincasa, also known as Catherine of Siena. The time frame considered is between 1380 and 1461, the period between Catherine's death and her canonization by Pope Pius II. The decades within this interval were marked by historical processes of great impact on medieval society, such as, for example, the Papal Schism and the reform movement of the Dominican Order, known as Osservanza. The objective of this work is to identify the uses given to Catherine's sainthood by the friars of the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, as a way of achieving certain purposes: the approval of the Third Order and the consolidation of the reform movement itself. Among the specific objectives, the following stand out: to understand how Catherine acted as a model for the Osservanza movement and how the model of sainthood attributed to her linked her even more to the Dominican Order. The main sources used are: the Legenda Maior, written by Raimundo delle Vigne; the Lesser Legend and the Supplement to the Legend, both written by Tommaso Caffarini; and the Castellano Process, the only current remnant of the canonical proceedings relating to the canonization process. As auxiliary sources, Catherine's letters and her book The Dialogue are considered, as well as documents relating to the teaching of the Catholic Church and hagiographic productions about other saints. The research confirmed that Catherine Benincasa's ascetic and mystical lifestyle was present in the first reformed communities, which were primarily female communities. It was also found that the same Dominicans who promoted and supported her cause for canonization were also figures who occupied key roles within the Dominican Order. Finally, when analyzing the model of sanctity attributed to Catherine, the concept of imitation of Christ and martyrdom stands out, present with great intensity in the hagiography, to the point of making Catherine an alter Christus in life, in death and even after death.
