SUMMARY:

The thesis consists of a comparative study between the historical trajectories of Brazil's Construtora Norberto Odebrecht (CNO) and Spain's Acciona between 1931 and 2014, with a focus on their internationalization processes. The chosen timeframe is justified by the fact that 1931 marks the founding of Entrecanales y Távora (now Acciona). Although the study primarily examines the construction companies' internationalization, this process cannot be understood apart from their historical trajectories and ties attached to their respective nation-states. The year of 2014, moreover, represents a turning point in the heavy construction industry, particularly in Latin America—a key region for Brazilian and Spanish firms—due to the impact of Lava-Jato Operation. Acciona and CNO are part of a broader context of capital globalization and the formation of large transnational corporations, a process that has rapidly developed itself in the second half of the 20th century. By examining the specific trajectories of these corporate groups, the thesis engages with paradigms in economic historiography that situate the internal decisions of these historical actors within the structural framework of uneven global capitalistdevelopment. Given that they are large capitalist conglomerates, the study also analyzes how this context is shaped by the actions of these very agents. To do so, the thesis combines literature on the subject with: (a) documents provided by the companies, often internal; (b) reports produced by specialized consulting firms or business associations; (c) newspaper articles, particularly from Brazilian and Spanish outlets; and (d) interviews with individuals connected to the companies in question. Finally, the study seeks to contribute to the understanding of the agents operating at the upper echelons of the capitalist system and how their ties to their nation-states are crucial in explaining their transformation into transnational corporations.
