This research analyzed the intellectual production of José Marianno Filho (1881-1946) between 1920 and 1940 and compared it with the way he was portrayed by the historiography of Brazilian architecture in the 20th century. The study was based on the hypothesis that this historiography was deeply influenced by the perspective of architect Lucio Costa (1902-1998), thus generating a series of distortions of architectural subjects and movements that disagreed with the modernist narrative. The objective was to examine the written work of José Marianno Filho and understand his thinking, recognizing the impact of the dissemination of Lucio Costa's perspective on the historiographical production of 20th-century Brazilian architecture. To this end, a comparative analysis was carried out between the portrayal of Marianno according to the classics of Brazilian architectural historiography and the content of his written work. Roger Chartier's notions of “representation” and “cultural practices” were added to the analysis in order to understand how Marianno's image was constructed in the history of architecture in the 20th century. It was found that the historiography of this segment mainly emphasized Marianno's role as a patron and defender of the Neocolonial Movement, largely omitting his intellectual production. It was also demonstrated that his contributions to the field of architectural criticism, in addition to being pioneering, found resonance after the 1960s, when criticism of Modernism began around the world. Finally, Marianno's most controversial and problematic discourses were exposed, seeking to offer a more comprehensive view of the critic and opening the door to new historical perspectives.
