SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze Queen Joanna I of Naples’s (1326-1382) construction of authority and gender performativity in relation to the papal institution, reflecting on how marriage, motherhood, and piety functioned as discursive spaces of power and negotiation of royal governance. For thirty-eight years, Joanna occupied the throne, becoming the first woman of the Angevin-Neapolitan dynasty to rule as reigning queen, taking on political, gender, and contractual responsibilities that her position of power and the Roman Church demanded of her – given her subjection to the political-religious institution as a vassal and a Christian. Although she possessed dynastic right to rule, the Neapolitan sovereign constantly needed to legitimize her political power before Christian society and the papacy. Thus, she went through a continuous process of building authority and performativity throughout her four decades of reign, being impacted by the normative religious matrix, as well as by social expectations, power struggles, and social relations through papal epistolary communication. Through a counter-reading of these letters, and mobilizing the concepts of queenship and performativity, we seek to reflect on Joanna's strategies, highlighting transgressions, tensions, and the possibilities of female royal agency in the 14th century.
