This study offers a comparative analysis of three works by Lucien Febvre devoted to central figures of the sixteenth century, Un destin, Martin Luther (1928), Le problème de l’incroyance au XVIᵉ siècle: la religion de Rabelais (1942), and Autour de l’Heptaméron: amour sacré, amour profane (1944), with the aim of examining the extent to which these studies mobilize procedures characteristic of modern biography, despite the author’s explicit refusal to classify them as biographies. The research explores the tensions between history and biography within the intellectual project of the Annales School and is grounded in the hypothesis that rejecting the biographical label does not entail denying the biographical as a historiographical practice, but rather constitutes the condition for its critical reformulation. It is argued that Febvre developed a distinctive mode of historical writing that incor-porates elements of modern biography, such as psychological complexity, the rejection of hagio-graphy, attention to mentalities, and the articulation between history, literature, and psychology, while subordinating these elements to the demands of a problem-oriented history centered on the rela-tionship between the individual and society. Methodologically, the study adopts a comparative ap-proach structured around thematic axes that address the role of the biographer, textual construction, the shaping of characters, and cross-cutting issues related to documentation, ethics, and historiogra-phical critique. The analysis of the prefaces, the internal structure of the works, narrative strategies, and the recurrence of key concepts reveals both continuities and shifts in Febvre’s writing. It con-cludes that the studies devoted to Luther, Rabelais, and Marguerite of Navarre form a coherent bio-graphical series, reaffirming the biographical as a legitimate and fruitful instrument of historiogra-phical inquiry within the Annales tradition.
