SUMMARY:

This research examines how The Crisis magazine, the official publication of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), instrumentalized the "American contradiction" to advocate not only for civil rights but for a new vision for the world.

Given the divergence between the United States' pro-freedom rhetoric and the brutal reality of segregation and discrimination to which African Americans were subjected, World War II provided a vast battleground for the Black community. They challenged government discourse by arguing that the nation needed to reform itself to remain consistent with the political agenda it sought to impose on other countries.

Through a continuous process of imagining and reimagining reality, The Crisis mobilized the "language of liberty" to expand the horizons of both American citizenship and the very notion of humanity.
