SUMMARY:

The purpose of this study is to analyze the contributions of women inventors within the Brazilian patent system between 1873 and 1910, which have been largely overlooked by historiography. Drawing upon previous research, we analyzed 9,301 patent applications found in the Industrial Privileges (PI) collection of the National Archives of Brazil (Arquivo Nacional — ANRJ), located in Rio de Janeiro, for the specified period, identifying 99 applications that list Brazilian and foreign women as inventors and co-inventors. From this survey, we sought to categorize the patented inventions by examining product types, the nationality of the inventors, and the number of authors and co-authors, among other relevant indicators. Consequently, our hypothesis is that even in the absence of legal barriers to patenting, Brazilian women faced social, cultural, and economic obstacles to engaging in inventive activities during the 19th century. After conducting a literature review, we found a scarcity of studies on this topic within the proposed period. This historiographical gap itself serves as a further indication of the historical invisibility of these women.
