SUMMARY:
This dissertation analyzes representations of the 1932 São Paulo Uprising produced by the press in Resende, Rio de Janeiro. Its aim is to understand how the newspapers A Lyra and A Opinião reported on, interpreted, and sought to ascribe meaning to the movement, identifying the terminology employed, pro-São Paulo or pro-government positions, and the effects of the war on Resende society. The research adopts a historical and qualitative approach based on an examination of issues published throughout 1932, considered alongside memoirs, Getúlio Vargas’s official speeches, legislation, statistical data, and specialized scholarship. It first discusses Resende’s historical development and geographical centrality, as well as historiographical interpretations of the movem ent’s political, economic, and regional motivations. It then investigates press coverage before the conflict, during the months of hostilities, and in the postwar period, with particular attention to the military occupation of the city, censorship, the circulation of information, care for the wounded and prisoners, and local social and economic effects. The findings show that, although the newspapers recognized constitutionalization as a legitimate demand, they consistently rejected armed action and aligned themselves with the rhetoric of the Provisional Government. expressions such as “rebellion,” “insurrection,” and “fratricidal struggle” were used to delegitimize São Paulo’s epic narrative, while Getúlio Vargas and the legalist forces were frequently associated with order, pacification, and national reconstruction. Nevertheless, this alignment did not preclude criticism of censorship, attacks on press free dom, and certain government policies. A comparison of official discourse, the Resende press, and the São Paulo press reveal an intense war of narratives in which concepts such as revolution, uprising, rebellion, and constitutionalism functioned as instruments of political legitimation and mobilization. The dissertation concludes that the newspapers analyzed acted simultaneously as historical sources and agents, contributing to the legitimation of a predominantly pro-government discourse on 1932. Resende’s perspective also reveals how a national conflict was experienced in the city’s everyday life and demonstrates that interpretations of the movement remain shaped by terminological, political, and symbolic disputes.
