RESUMO:

The present thesis aims at analyzing the transformation of the social, political, cultural and religious practices of the Pastoral Operária (PO) and of the workers' movement of ABC Paulista and Volta Redonda in the period of transition from military dictatorship to the period of redemocratization in Brazil, between the years 1978 and 1988. This is due to the importance of these regions to the national political scene, since they served as relevant spaces of political experiences developed by the working class. The ABC and the city of Volta Redonda, in the late 1970s and during the 1980s, became important centers of political and social experiences for the workers' and catholic movements. The working class of the 1970s was marked by a worsening of wages, and their work was based on the strategies of coping with the "wage wage" and "exploitation of the labor force" binomial. Added to this were political persecutions of union leaders, religious leaders and pastoral workers. Based on this premise, we understand that the demands made by the Workers' Pastoral in defense of the interests of the working class of ABC Paulista and Volta Redonda were fundamental to include a agenda focused on the world of work and a consensus on the restoration of Brazilian democracy as a form guarantee the collective rights and political participation of workers.
