RESUMO:

It is a discussion of the narratives created as an instrument of power. Those who constructed images about the other and their territories, justifying the Lusitanian exploration and domination of the west coast of Africa in the XV century. To this end, the analytical effort will focus on the Chronicle of the discovery and conquest of Guinea, by Gomes Eanes de Zurara, as well as in Esmeraldo de situ orbis, by Duarte Pacheco Pereira.

These works will be discussed from a comparative perspective. An approach to trace the approximations, ruptures, changes, continuities and discontinuities in the legacy of medieval imagery about Africa and Africans. Those that were based, for example, representations of barbarians and savages, as well as the traditional oppositions of culture versus nature, civility versus savagery, order versus disorder, war and peace, enemy and ally.
