AMONG ESTÁCIOS, JORGES, VICENTES AND RAIMUNDOS: THE MACHADIAN MALE FIGURATIONS IN HELENA AND IAIÁ GARCIA IN THE FLUMINENSE CAPITAL IN BRAZIL OF THE XIX CENTURY. (1876-1878)
Masculinities, Helena, Iaiá Garcia, Machado de Assis
This work has as main objective to investigate the construction of masculinities and constitutive logics of Machado's characters in the works Helena (1876) and Iaiá Garcia (1878). Based on Machado de Assis's observation as a guiding thread, I seek to map the gender relations that fall within the debate between history and literature in these two novels in the style of a booklet. In this sense, we seek to understand how much the nineteenth-century literary construction is capable of supporting and demonstrating the various forms of male figurations that escape a unique manorial logic.
