SUMMARY:

The research seeks, through the press and the Proceedings of the Chamber of Deputies, to analyze the process of extinction of the militias in Rio de Janeiro, which occurred in 1831, which was due to the Law of creation of the National Guard, through the discussions that arise in the carioca press and in the political circles from 1830 to 1834.

The period before the abdication of d . Pedro I was a time of political effervescence, when political groups, with different government projects, sought space in the development of the Brazilian State. All this in the midst of a major political and military crisis in the country, in the search for the construction of a model of Empire and citizenship. It is intended to analyze the end of the militias  as part of a modernizing political project of a segregating and elitist Brazil in the post-Revolution of 7 April.
