SUMMARY:

This thesis has the central objective of demonstrating that, between the period from 1870 to 1885, through the use of elaborate rhetorical strategies, based on a wide range of diverse sources and direct actions, the intellectuals of the “generation of 1870”, managed to prevent the effectuation of projects on mass Chinese immigration to Brazil, and thus ended up with what was seen as the 'lifeline' of the Imperial status quo. The present research also demonstrates its relevance in proposing to explore a point that is still unclear in our historiography - the imbrications of the abolitionist movement with the fight against Chinese immigration. Finally, we will discuss how the Chinese question led to the construction of Brazilian sinological knowledge, synchronous to the formation of 19th century neocolonial academic knowledge.
