SUMMARY:

The present thesis will approach two points that intercross. At first point, we will reflect about the constitution of Christianity as a religion linked to power in the Middle Ages. We will seek to understand how Christianity became a “religion of images” from the 13th century, according to Schmitt's expression, and, mostly, how these became an instrument in the propagation of the faith, being used by the Church helping in the construction of a New Testament spirituality. In this sense, the changes suffered by the imago-crucifix, together with the increase in production and diffusion, will serve as sources to apprehend this new spiritual construction in the Latin West, which, between the 13th and 14th centuries, had the Christ-man as the center of its devotion. Our analysis is focused in Giotto de Bondone and the images of the crucified Christ produced by him. The choice of this painter is due to the understanding that it was he who, in Italy, first started the process of humanizing the image of the dead Christ, in another words, he has brought to that image a real and human character. In the second moment, we will focus at the analysis of his life, his workshop and his political participation in Florence and also it will be presented, as well as a reflection on the painter and the temporalization created around him as the precursor of a new art, since three hundred Italian. Concluding that, our intention is to analyze the images of the crucifixion produced by Giotto, its relationship with the neo-testametary spirituality and to think about the painter's contribution in the construction of a pictographic model in the form of representing the dead Christ in the Latin West, widespread and naturalized in our society.
