SUMMARY:

The discussions contained in this thesis are linked to a major thematic axis, the struggle of representations and the periphery x center conflict contained in it. Social conflicts and idiosyncrasies of the city are noticeable in the topographic construction of urban spaces. In this sense, we will work with the thesis that the periphery abandoned by the State and discriminated against by the hegemonic bases of society, built its own representations and networks of sociability. Including, building for yourself, your own image, identity, your signs and developing your self-esteem. In this scenario, the figure of Zeca Pagodinho synthesizes this construction. The aim of this work is to examine the high party pagoda, which emerged on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, and which has been transformed into a national phenomenon, from a historical perspective. Analyzing its historicity, its insertion in the context of socioeconomic conflicts between the periphery and the center, as well as its main actors, both in terms of its production and consumption, until its expansion into the national market. An analysis based on the new cultural history will be sought, studying the networks of sociability created by inhabitants of the periphery in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These sociability networks were configured in cultural and artistic movements that originated a new genre of samba, more popular, called pagode, and consequently, create a new niche in the cultural market. Based on an approach inserted in micro history, the career of Zeca Pagodinho will be established as the focus of analysis, who managed to cross the boundaries established between the periphery and the center, establishing himself, as an icon of the first and spreading a genre among the second musical before marginalized. Zeca would become popular with the support of the media and would end up taking the pagoda from the periphery to the ideological center of the metropolis of Rio. By making this movement towards the center, the artist does not detach himself from his ethos, the opposite of that, he becomes the bulwark of this region, causing the periphery with its peculiarities to be consumed by the center. In this way, the object of this project is not the figure of Zeca Pagodinho, but it is this character inserted in the context of the periphery, being his representative, against the background of Brazilian society, with its dichotomous precepts, its social conflicts inherent to the capitalist system. In this scenario, Zeca appears as the link between hybrid cultural realities and as the voice of the periphery.
