This work intends to make a brief analysis of the life and work of composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia during the period between the years 1790 and 1821. We seek with this dissertation historiographical analysis about the social rise of the composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia, in order to demonstrate how from their status as the son of black-liners and his humble origins could aspire to an ecclesiastical office in the eighteenth century. We aim to propose debates about the artistic transformations in the exchange of cultures between the Portuguese court and the subjects of the tropics, especially the building of the Royal Chapel, the adaptation of the art scene and the music made in Rio de Janeiro. We commit to analyze the relationship of José Maurício Nunes Garcia in the cutting room, to mediate between the natives and European musicians. The trajectory of Father José Maurício Nunes Garcia influenced the Rio de Janeiro of his time, both for its musical production that has become an artistic reference to the city, and by overcoming their social status.
