The mobilization of corruption as a political instrument in the tolerance, election and overthrow of governments in Brazil (1955-1964)

SUMMARY:

The purpose of this study proposal is to examine how the construction of the anti-corruption discourse present in allegations of corruption is mobilized as a political instrument in the justification for the dismantling of State projects in Brazil between the years 1951 and 1964. In this sense, newspaper articles will be examined and parliamentary documents that preceded the coup attempts in 1954, which culminated in the suicide of President Getúlio Vargas and the 1964 military military coup, which ousted President João Goulart and inaugurated 21 years of dictatorial rule in Brazil. The dynamics of this dispute is felt in the political game, the power projects represent the different interests. In this aspect, I try to think about the disputes of the class fractions for power with René Dreifuss and using as a theoretical framework the notion of Integral State by Antônio Gramsci, to think about the dispute between the State for different political groups. I also use Bourdieu's notion of symbolic capital that is proper to the political field, as it interferes with the representation that is built about the agents inserted in it. As the press is an influential political instrument of power that contributes to the construction of representations, its position is not impartial. By giving visibility to a given event, enhancing its dimension, the press is able to interfere in social and political life. In this sense, analyzing the relationship between the press, class fractions and anti-corruption discourse in the justification of coups is what was not built by this research.
