SUMMARY:

Among so many aspects and forms of materialization of Brazilian racism, this thesis reflects on two places of intellectual production: the Brazilian Folklore Magazine and the Folklore Museum Édison Carneiro. The hypothesis of this thesis is that, when working for an image of a mestizo nation, they ended up reproducing racist approaches, underestimating the black culture in the face of the desired Brazilianness. For moving forward in this investigation, we followed the reports of folklorists associated with the National Commission of Folklore and/or Campaign for the Defense of Brazilian Folklore to understand how they appropriated from the miscegenation ideal and incorporated it the black culture in the project of national identity which they defended as subordinate. In addition to these sources, we analyzed some articles published in the Brazilian Folklore Magazine and the catalogs of exhibitions about the black culture at the Folklore Museum Édison Carneiro through them it was possible to investigate that Folklore consolidated a racist project where black culture was marginalized in front ofnational when the country legitimized its identity as mestizo.
