Sant’Anna do Pirahy, Death, Funeral Rites, Catholic Church, Eghties.
The present work has the general objective of presenting and analyzing the
transformations that took place in the funeral rites during the years from 1870 to 1890,
in the parish of Sant'Anna do Pirahy, located in the Paraíba Fluminense Valley. Through
the analysis of funeral rites, it will be possible to understand how these changes affected
the formation of a vision of death in piraiense manorial society. For this, we will use
several primary sources, such as death record books of the Matriz de Sant’Anna and the
City Council, wills, inventories, among others. Therefore, our main research object is
the funeral rites, which have the function of assisting the deceased in his passage to the
afterlife. Lastly, we will notice the changes that occurred in the individual's relationship
with dying, in the last decades of Imperial Brazil.
