SUMMARY:

The thesis to be developed is interested in the Brazilian Army Promotions Act of 1850 and its relationship with the formation of an identity for the Army's officer corps. In this qualifying exam, the objectives are to analyze Brazilian imperial policy since the arrival of conservatives in power, in 1837, until the year of approval of the Promotions Law, and to analyze the political debate surrounding the approval of the Promotions Law of 1850. Furthermore, the political actors involved in the debate and their relations with the imperial state will be analyzed in order to understand the debate surrounding the approval of the law in the Chamber of Deputies.
