SUMMARY:

The dissertation examines corsair actions that took place in the South Atlantic, specifically in Portuguese America, in the transition from the 16th to the 17th century. As a guiding issue for our research, we will seek religious conflicts that arose within Christianity in Early Modern Europe. We will analyze the production of reports of privateer actions in Portuguese America, namely: the attack by Thomas Cavendish on the town of Santos, São Vicente and Vitória (1591-1592) and the occupation of Recife in 1595. we will have as sources the reports of the English navigators who belonged to these belligerent fleets. To counteract this literature, we will use Portuguese sources produced by Portuguese clergymen and official agents.
