SUMMARY:

During the 19th century, there was a progressive increase in commercial activities and the delineation of a mercantile elite in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It is in this scenario that this research is inserted, more precisely in the second half of the 1800s. In face of the multiple commercial sectors, the dry and wet goods sector was selected. This choice derives from the fact that the secos e molhados warehouses sold several types of products, solids and liquids, and were one of the essential establishments for the maintenance of the daily life of the population, thus having an intense movement of services and people. The main objective of this research is to understand the limits and legal and social possibilities of women's performance in the condition of widows when they assumed the protagonism in the family's commerce of secos e molhados in the second half of the 19th century. Thus, we seek to investigate the way in which these women managed to establish themselves commercially after losing their husbands and taking over the administration of property and businesses.
