SUMMARY:

The mystical experience projects the individual to an ethical transformation of himself and in the relationship he establishes with the world. Such projection makes the individual follow a journey in search of interiority, a knowing of himself that also transforms him in face of his social and cultural reality. This change (or subjective construction of the self) happens within power and gender relations in which the conventual life under the cloister imposes, for example, a whole structure of submission of women in relation to men. Thus, the mystical and feminine "autobiographical" writing in Early Modernity demonstrates the woman's perception of life (the relations of sociability and power), of spirituality, and of herself, even if subjected to the interference and censorship of the confessor and spiritual guide. Given the above, the thesis has as its research object the writing of Mother Teresa of Jesus, reformer and founder of the Discalced Carmelite Order in Spain during the second half of the 16th century. Thus, the main research source will be the first publication of the books Vida and Castillo Interior, las Moradas, which were written by the mother and published after her death in 1588. We consider that Teresa's texts and the act of writing emerged as a creative and audacious novelty, given her historical context marked by patriarchy and rigid hierarchy within society and counter-reformist Catholicism. This study will be guided by the concepts and theoretical-methodological procedure of the gender perspective.
