SUMMARY:

This research seeks to analyze the connections between press and political activity of colored men through the trajectory of Maurício José de Lafuente during the regency period between 1831 and 1837 in Rio de Janeiro. The objective is to evidence the existence of a political movement by free and freedmen, examining the change in the political culture of the Empire's capital, when the streets became the locus of politics. The 1830s can be characterized as a period of great restlessness and possibilities, marked by major transformations in the political and social sphere of the Empire that counted on the active participation of groups that were in the most varied positions in the social hierarchy, and among these individuals, this research highlights the trajectory of Maurício José de Lafuente. Maurício Lafuente was a brown man, a cadet in Pernambuco, a brilliant negotiator at the Court and owner of the Tipografia Patriótica, who had his trajectory crossed three times by the Brazilian justice system. This colored man will be the common thread of the research that will seek to investigate the different images built about his trajectory in the periodical press in the midst of the political game, to understand the articulation of free and freedmen in the struggle for autonomy to belong to the political and social sphere and to evidence the network of sociability created from specific political and social interests between the exalted liberals and the caramurus.
