SUMMARY:

This research has as its object the Public Slaughterhouse of Santa Cruz, built

in the Imperial Fazenda de Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, and its role in technological

innovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Starting from an initial debate on

the concepts of technique, technology and science, we seek to contextualize how the

concentration of mass slaughter occurred in other countries in order to comparatively

analyze how it was applied in the Santa Cruz Slaughterhouse, since this was constituted

in model for the other municipalities of the Empire. In order to support this approach,

the topics presented here deal with the role of the Empire Law of 1828 in the regulation

of Municipal Councils and organization of cities, analyzing sanitary interventions for

the control and concentration of the slaughter of animals for consumption. Also

indicated are the requests for industrial privileges and the inventions produced for

slaughtering activities in Brazil, observed as examples of technological application to

the slaughterhouse space in that period.
