BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: História
SUMMARY:

The research is dedicated to the study of the relations between indigenous groups and colonizers during the process of colonial occupation of the hinterlands of Paraíba Nova until the consolidation of the region with the coffee economy, between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing on compulsory labor and other control mechanisms used by the settlers for the employment of native labor, legitimized by the colonial and imperial indigenist policy, or practiced in absentia of them.
Historians of the New Indigenous History, through analyses of documents such as postmortem inventories, baptism records, minutes of the chambers and judges of orphans, censuses, correspondence and travelers' reports show us the various strategies that the colonizers used to mask the seizure and indigenous slavery in plantations, mineral exploration, among other activities. The protagonism of the paulistas in the advance of the frontiers in the hinterlands, in the mineral exploration and in the indigenous seizure is determinant for the colonial occupation of Paraíba Nova, a region considered "forbidden lands" and used by explorers for the derailment of gold, especially after the opening of the New Way, opened by Garcia Rodrigues Paes in the early eighteenth century. The Letters of the officers of the Chamber of Guaratinguetá (SP), after the resumption of the process of opening the so-called "Way of Piedade", linking the old village da Piedade (today Lorena-SP) and the Fazenda de Santa Cruz, in Rio de Janeiro, between 1765 and 1785, document not only the process of occupation of Paraíba Nova - a region that comprised a territory that extended from Areias-SP to the hinterlands of Barra do Piraí-RJ - but also the relations of the settlers with the original peoples. The analysis of the experiences of the late settlements in our region, among which São Luiz Beltrão, São João de Queluz, Valença and Conservatória, based on the historiography that deals with the regional and indigenist theme, allows us to understand the resumption of a State policy that allowed the use of labor in slavery or compulsory labor. I intend to answer the following question: How did the different practices and working relationship between settlers and indigenous people observed in the part of São Paulo repeat themselves and/or perpetuate themselves in the Paraíba Fluminense Valley?
