SUMMARY:

The present research deals with the role of the brazilian military intelligentsia and Jarbas Passarinho in the process of consolidation of the dictatorship, with emphasis on the period between 1964 and 1968. It specifically analyzes the influence of military thought on Jarbas Passarinho's political practice, as an organic intellectual of the regime, in the gramscian sense of the term. That is, with an action not reduced to just a speech in defense of the status quo, but as someone who actively participated in the dictatorial political dynamics. It starts from the assumption that the predominant military ideology in the armed forces, in the pre-1964 period, was not the only intellectual influence on Jarbas Passarinho and, consequently, on the impact of his actions during the dictatorship period. In this sense, the analysis of the role of the armed forces and their power relations in the brazilian State, through the military intelligentsia, of which Jarbas Passarinho was a part, constitutes as an articulating axis of the investigation. And, this way, this work advocates the hypothesis that, although traditional military thought had a strong influence on Jarbas Passarinho, this organic intellectual of the military regime organized his ideas through a congruence of heterogeneous values that had a substantial impact on his actions during the dictatorship.
