Military Dictatorship, Catholic Church, Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense.
This research seeks to understand the experience of the Catholic clergy during the period from 1976 to 1989, aiming to identify how the dictatorial regime acted in the Baixada Fluminense, especially in relation to the members of the diocese of Nova Iguaçu and how they were watched by the repressive apparatus that saw them as a threat to the current regime. This work encompasses the period that has as its starting point the year 1976, in which, at the end, Dom Adriano Hypólito was kidnapped by an extreme right-wing group, and as its final point, the year 1989, when the first elections took place. directly to the Presidency of the Republic. The research investigates the period in which the country and its population experienced several social, economic and political changes that had a strong influence on the paths followed by the Brazilian State. It seeks to demonstrate, mainly with the use of documents recorded by various organs of the repressive apparatus, how members of the Iguaçuan clergy were closely monitored by the agents of repression and for what reasons this observation took place. Part of the documentation used as primary sources was produced by the Brazilian State's information bodies and are available at the Public Archive of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the National Archive. There is also the use of documents and periodicals produced by the diocese itself, as well as reports from some written press vehicles in the city of Rio de Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense.
