SUMMARY:

The present study aims to analyze the notion of sustainable development in the
environmental policy agenda of the World Bank, between the period of 1992 and 2010,
also paying attention to the political formulations that influenced environmental debates
at the time, such as the process that led the World Bank to diversify its agenda and insert
sustainable development as one of the central themes in its policies towards its member
countries. The sources used will be the World Development Reports from 1992 and
2010, both published by the World Bank and dedicated to the theme of the relationship
between environment and development. It is important for the research in question to
understand that the World Bank acted as a leader in international cooperation for
capitalist development and was present in all spaces that consolidated the dominant
environmental debate through an economic and mercantile conception of nature. We
believe, therefore, that all these socio-environmental, political, and economic issues are
extremely important for understanding the environmental debate organized by the
World Bank, seeking to analyze the entanglements that revolve around this institution
that has already proven to be complex and intriguing. We will contextualize the
aforementioned reports in the respective conjunctures in which they were produced,
comparing the ideas, foundations, and main proposals of both based on a critical
bibliography about the environmental issue.
