SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the slave owners in the second half of the 19th century. The intention is to examine the economic, political, and social aspects of their lives to understand the ruptures and continuities of slaveholding values in Imperial Brazil. To this end, the study constructs the life trajectories of these masters. It starts from the premise that the persistence of slavery in 19th-century Brazil was the result of a convergence of interests among small, medium, and large slave owners, who formed a social commitment to the slaveholding institution. To address this issue, the city of Porto Feliz in São Paulo was chosen as a case study, given the variety of sources that will allow us to cross-reference documents, so that the same individual can be found in diverse social contexts. We will use a cross-analysis of various documentary corpora: baptism records of free and enslaved people, death registers, marriage records of free and enslaved people, wills, post-mortem inventories, freedom suits, newspapers, nominative lists of inhabitants, and notarial books.
