SUMMARY:

This research focuses on female religious life in the Convent of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro between 1780 and 1833. The time frame covers four “generations” of nuns, on whom convent memory has built up the story that they are heirs to the legacy of Jacinta Rodrigues Aires (Jacinta de São José), founder of the Recollection that gave rise to that institution. The aim is therefore to examine the role played by the other nuns who succeeded and administered the space after its institutionalization, in principle from the position of Prioresses of the Convent. By looking at these women at the head of the convent, the aim is to ascertain details of community life, the relationship with the clerics to whom they were subordinate, the economic management supervised by and at the same time shared with the trustees, as well as the strategies they devised for the maintenance and operation of the “convent factory” when managing financial and material resources, including considering the legal transactions adopted to obtain income, based on the real estate deeds registered with the city's First Notary Office and the data on rental contracts contained in the Book of Accounts and Tenancies, located in the institution's archives. This will be done by tracing the networks of solidarity and sociability, as well as the influence of the convent on the occupation of the territory that bordered it and its identification with the Sacred.
