SUMMARY:

This research will analyze the political ideas of Francisco Salles Torres Homem, presented in the newspaper O Independente between 1832 and 1833, while recognizing Torres Homem's trajectory as a man of color and from a modest family, as he faced the challenges imposed by the racial hierarchies of nineteenth-century Rio de Janeiro.
The Regency Period, marked by the abdication of Dom Pedro I, provided an environment of political decentralization that stimulated debates and public manifestations, especially through the press, which became the stage for disputes between the political factions of exalted liberals, moderates and restorers. At the same time, Enlightenment ideas and news of the French, En glish, American and Haitian Revolutions reached Brazil, inspiring debates around the ideas of freedom, citizenship, civil and political rights.
As a young intellectual who had recently graduated in medicine, Torres Homem had access to anti-slavery and Enlightenment ideas and was informed about revolutionary events around the world. He took advantage of the flexibilization of the public space available in the press to express himself politically as a moderate liberal, using the pages of O Independente  to present his plans for the future of the country.
