SUMMARY:

This paper aims to develop a study on the activities of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB) in the city of Volta Redonda. Firstly, the party was chosen in view of the resumption of the name by the former Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) during the recent political crisis in Brazil. The MDB, born from bipartisanship and the impositions of recomposition of political groups during the military dictatorship, survived this period and has great relevance in the Brazilian “New Republic”. The city of Volta Redonda, linked to the construction of the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional, has already been the scene of studies on the dictatorship and its relationship with the city, but focusing on social movements of workers, the left and the Church. In short, the aim here is to understand the activities of the only opposition party allowed by the dictatorship in Volta Redonda, a city that was made a National Security Area in 1973.
