SUMMARY:

This thesis investigates the characterizations attributed to dances practiced in Egypt in the second half of the 19th century, according to Eça de Queiroz’s travelogue, entitled “O Egito – Notas de Viagem”, and inserts itself into historiographical debates on orientalism, gender and colonialism. The study seeks to historicize the senses and meanings attributed by the author to Egyptian dances, considering the specificities of Portuguese orientalism and the gender dynamics present in the narrative. The research reveals how European domination contributed to the feminization of these dances and the consequent historical erasure of the men who also performed them, since their artistic practices did not align with European ideals of masculinity. Through discourse analysis, the thesis explores the symbolic and social disputes surrounding dancing bodies, the spaces they occupied and the meanings they produced, highlighting the relevance of dance as an object of historical study and its connection with power and identity relations in the colonial context.
