SUMMARY:

This dissertation investigates how the Catholic intellectual Alceu Amoroso Lima "imagined the nation" during his conservative period, from 1930 to 1942. The main objective is to analyze his formulation of a national identity project and his activities as a lay leader and intellectual mediator. The research stems from the central hypothesis that Alceu's conception of the nation, grounded in an organic, hierarchical, and morally Catholic worldview, demonstrated remarkable permanence, not undergoing a fundamental rupture with the establishment of the Estado Novo in 1937. The study proposes that the authoritarian regime, in fact, reinforced his anti- liberal positions. The work examines the formulation of this Catholic nationalism as a "third way," which opposed both liberalism and communism, and critically differentiated itself from European fascisms through its subordination of politics to transcendent religious values.
