SUMMARY:

This study aims to investigate the Real Theatro de São João as a privileged space in the political sphere of Rio de Janeiro society between 1813 and 1824. This theatre, built in the context of the transfer of the Portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro, was part of the social life of the period, being the main cultural space and one of the first theatrical buildings in the city. The wealthiest members of society, and the royal family itself, frequented this theatre often, attending performances and festivities. However, far beyond its social importance, this theatre was the stage for various political celebrations during the reign of King João VI. Using periodicals from the period as our main source, we seek to understand how the Real Theatro de São João became one of the main political locus of the city, participating in the festivities and ceremonies of the Portuguese monarchy, and serving as a space for the political expression of Rio de Janeiro society.
