SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to highlight witchcraft practices as part of the agency of gender identity performance based on the inquisitorial processes of three women, these being defendants: Catarina da Ribeira (1637), Maria Vaz (1641) and Luiza Maria (1668), in Portugal throughout the 17th century. Furthermore, we propose to identify, from these three particular cases and the onomastic method, how the religious practices and heterodoxies undertaken by these women allowed a kind of agency in their unfavorable context in which these three witches were inserted, guaranteeing their survival and subsistence. Thus, we found that, although informal sociability and mutual aid networks were particularly characterized by being limited and ambiguous, some urban witches employed these magical-superstitious practices as a profession, constituting a network of clientele around themselves. Furthermore, other individual trajectories and inquisitorial processes were also consulted in order to obtain a broader overview of the female condition and the elaboration of their strategies for daily resistance and ways of obtaining autonomy.
