RESUMO:

The objective of this research is to discuss the impact on work and professional schooling at Santa Cruz Farm in the 1880s, with Santa Isabel School as its protagonist. The paper analyzes a set of diverse historical documents: official speeches by the City Council about the School, formal requests from the people of the Treasury regarding the lack of education to their children, books by intellectual defenders of technical education. It is intended to point out the socioeconomic impact on education and work caused by the transfer from the Slaughterhouse to the Santa Cruz Farm in the 1880s and to discuss how professional instruction appears in the various intertwined voices of the process: the City Council's instruction committee, people from people ”, intellectuals who defend professional education. Thus, our interpretation of the sources emphasizes the social demands and the paternalistic action of the government involving the school institution and the instruction as the scene of conflicts and social struggles for education in the Capital of the Imperial Court.
