RESUMO:

This research deals with Federal Law No. 5,465 of July 3, 1968, popularly known as the “Lei do Boi”. The norm created a system for reserving vacancies in the high school and higher education institutions maintained by the Union, in the courses of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine to candidates, farmers or their children, who proved their relationship with agriculture, whether through possession, use or property of the institution. land, unionization or residence in rural areas, and in the case of applicants for higher education, to those who had completed high school in agricultural or agricultural technical schools. Proposed by Deputy Ultimo de Carvalho (ARENA/MG) and promulgated during the intensification of capitalist relations in the countryside, as a result of the process that was called the modernization of Brazilian agriculture, the law had as justification to take the youth from the countryside to educational institutions. so that he, in possession of cultural capital, could transform it into productivity. Using Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, we understand that the “Lei do Boi” was used as a strategy of social reproduction of various segments linked to land ownership. To this end, an empirical survey of the beneficiaries of the “Lei do Boi” was carried out in one of its recipients: the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. From the analysis of students of the Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine courses that joined the “Lei do Boi” in the institution, we observe how the law has benefited significantly young people whose economic capital, endorsed by the landowner and the rural company, and cultural, represented by family capital, was part of their trajectories, configuring a practice of social reproduction of the dominant groups linked to the rural universe.
