SUMMARY:

The object of study of this research is the perspective of Oscar Wilde
(1854–1900) on the construction of life as a work of art. The main source we intend to
mobilize is Wilde’s autobiographical letter entitled De Profundis, written at Reading
Gaol in 1897. This document dialogues closely with theoretical and political criticism
essays published by the Irish playwright in 1891, such as “The decay of lying”, “The
critic as artist” and “The soul of the man under socialism”, which will also be studied in
the course of this research. In short, we aim to examine Oscar Wilde's self writing in his
missive and debate, based on the Foucault’s notion of aesthetics of existence, the
ethical-artistic proposal pointed out by the playwright even in his last years of life.
