SUMMARY:

This research aims to analyze the Jesuit interpretation of Confucianism - based on a historical approach inspired by  "Cultural Hybridity" concepts - that had begun to Matteo Ricci and the publication of Tianzhu Shiyi in1603, and consolidated in the seventeenth century thanks to Confucius Sinarum Philosophus. In "Cultural Hybridity," Peter Burke deals with the various ways of interpreting hybridity among cultures. Burke refers to the Jesuit mission in China, paying attention to the missionary Matteo Ricci and his religious accommodation method as a demonstration of hybridity. That method involved studying the Chinese language and Confucianism's interpretation to foster Chinese people's conversion to Christianity. The studies drawn up by Matteo Ricci and other missionaries engendered a series of interpretations that can be classified as hybrids. Therefore, the object of this research will be analyzed from the Cultural Hybridity's perspective, according to the foundations of the Jesuit interpretation of Confucianism.
