"Poor mothers with an irregular life": justifications of a tutored freedom of innocents in Piraí (1880-1890)

This dissertation proposes an investigation of the social places of innocent children from Lei de 28 de September of 1871, and your mothers at Piraí municipality. This investigation is delimited between 1880 and the first months of 1900. Our search wanted to answer if the freedom of this children was affected by their family being enslaved. We propose a gender analysis of black women, enslaved or in the freedom process, who became mothers after the free womb law. We want to show the dilemma between women, family and labor in a scenario of coexistence of slavery and free workers. With a focus on contract of services with children like workers. Our documentary sources are tutelage process and service agreement from 1880. Basis with these aspects we want investigate how important is the networks of sociability for mothers and children with the community; the expectations of work and social insertion from these mothers and sons, and the former owners; and what the owners of Piraí choose to do with this minors’ children, how the law suggested.
