SUMMARY:

 This dissertation has as its object of study the enslaved subjects of the Imperial Fazenda de Santa Cruz, a large farm in the captaincy of Rio de Janeiro, which in the 19th century began to rent its slaves to the services of the Royal House and to individuals in the Parishes of Rio de Janeiro. January. This is a study whose general objective is to accompany a group of subjects in their work relationships to understand what was being triggered from the labor sphere. Thus, we seek to describe the way in which these different individuals presented themselves in the analyzed documents, through the search by name. The records of rents have three nominative categories: the names of the enslaved, renters and guarantors. The enslaved correspond to a group of 209 enslaved, 100 men and 109 women, divided into trade classes. The renters, the subject who required the jobs of the enslaved, make up in the documentation a network of 46 names, 40 men and 6 women. While the guarantor, a trusted name for the reliability of rentals, make up a nominative list with 57 names, 51 men and 6 women. Through the detailed description of rents and their subjects, we seek a set of significant signs that allow us to adjust an intelligible structure of understanding of the probable meanings of the worlds of work in the second half of the 19th century.
