SUMMARY:

Studying body image in different populations is important as it is related to the development of the subject's body identity, covering factors such as self-acceptance, self-esteem and self-concept. Researchers have sought to study body image as well as related concepts, however research related to this topic in people with disabilities is still scarce, specifically in adolescents with visual impairments. In this sense, there is an aspect that some scholars have sought to better understand: provocations related to appearance in the school context. These provocations are known in international literature as apereance-related teasing, translated into Portuguese as appearance-related teasing, however studies investigating this topic in adolescents with visual impairments are scarce. Therefore, this research aims to understand how adolescents with visual impairment have experienced issues related to the appearance of their body in the school context and how this has interfered with the formation of their body image. This study is qualitative, exploratory, transversal, field and descriptive. The target population will be approximately 30 visually impaired schoolchildren, of both sexes, aged between 10 and 19 years old, including students with low vision, congenital blindness and acquired blindness. Participants will come from inclusive schools as well as educational centers specializing in visual impairment. To this end, semi-structured interviews will be carried out and information will also be collected through a sociodemographic questionnaire. Content analysis will be used to analyze the data. It is expected to understand issues related to body appearance in the school context and how this can interfere with the formation of body image, as well as the possible impacts of provocations related to appearance and its effects on this population, thus providing a basis for future socio-pedagogical projects that aim at full development in this population.
