SUMMARY:

This is an ongoing research project whose central purpose is to establish a critical and creative dialogue between the fields of education and art and culture. Based on this relationship, sometimes in aesthetic intertwinings, sometimes in ethical dispersions, the work seeks to create an equally critical and creative reflection on the representations of school and its educational contexts in comic books, focusing on the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips by Bill Watterson. The intersections evoked and the eventual interdisciplinary combinations resulting from these dialogues have been constructed, among other authors, concepts and theoretical perspectives, from the perspective of Paulo Freire's thought and the aesthetic and, why not, also ethical moments that reveal new worlds, experiences and existences that are revealed in language, in the arts, in images, in imagination and, above all, in education. Thus, starting from this approximation-disjunction between comics and education and the provocations raised by the Calvin and Hobbes strips, the study dedicates its attention to the construction of reflection on the relationships – and also on the tensions – experienced within the school environment, amidst the diversity of daily life experienced by students, educators, parents and the school community in general, paying attention to how such encounters, dialogues, disputes and coexistence are established. Considering the interlocutions and possible clashes during interactions between art/education, comic books/school, childhood/adulthood, imagination in critical and creative power/reality in concreteness of conformity and hopeless adaptation, the relevance of this research is justified, among other reasons, by the prominence of arts and images, particularly comics, as a way of accessing a new reality, in its aesthetic representation and in the constitution of the human being in its subjectivity, language, imagination, curiosity and thought.
