SUMMARY:

This work, still under development, deals with the study of the relations between work and teacher health in the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, located in the metropolitan region of the State of Rio de Janeiro. It is part of a research coordinated by LIEPE (Laboratory of State, Power and Education Investigation), which aims to investigate the same topic in several education networks, including municipal public networks, state networks and private basic education networks. This dissertation starts from the perspective that neoliberalism goes beyond a strictly economic model, also representing a form of management of psychic suffering. We understand that neoliberalism not only generates illnesses, but also establishes a system to manage them. From this perspective, we seek to understand how transformations in contemporary capitalism relate to the metamorphoses of labor, especially in light of the emergence of flexible accumulation. This process is marked by a crisis as a central category of social theory analysis. However, what we observe is the emergence of new modalities of work and the decharacterization of their traditional forms, both marked by a profound precariousness. We aim to analyze this ongoing process, taking into account the reality of Brazilian dependent capitalism and, in particular, how it affects the health of teaching workers. In order to analyze malaise, suffering and psychic illness, we mainly use the theoretical framework of dialectical-materialism, with emphasis on the concepts elaborated by Gramsci. Concepts such as the integral or expanded State, hegemony, the educating State and the psychophysical adaptation of the worker are fundamental to understand the mediations between capitalist production in the context of neoliberalism and the school, which capital engenders through various fronts of action. That said, and recognizing that education has a fundamental role in the reproduction of the hegemony of the dominant classes – by training and conforming students to incorporate their values and sociability – we seek to investigate the axes that shape basic education under neoliberalism. We will analyze the main guidelines for the gradual implementation of the aspects that define this school model, which we call school-company, and how the teaching work is affected by these changes. We aim to analyze the specificities of the teaching work in the face of the ambiguity imposed by neoliberal policies, which sometimes blame teachers for school failure – measured by questionable parameters of metrification of education – and sometimes relegate them to mere supporting actors in the pedagogical work, emptying the historical meaning of teaching practice. From these elements, we seek to understand teacher illness, escaping individual responsibility and investigating the mediations between neoliberalism, school privatization, job insecurity and teacher health. Finally, as a central proposal of the work, we will seek to analyze the developments and materializations of these processes in the municipal education network of Nova Iguaçu. Keywords: Neoliberalism. Teaching work. Psychic suffering.
