SUMMARY:

This thesis sought to analyze Black theater in the city of Rio de Janeiro, investigating its political and educational possibilities in the fight against racism. To this end, it focused on experiences with a declared anti-racist stance in plays, such as themes, elements of African and Afro-Brazilian culture, considering Black theater as a political and educational space. This research was justified as an analytical possibility of theater's contributions to the field of ethnic-racial relations, a strategy of activism, and a deeper understanding of Black contributions to the arts and education. To construct the arguments, bibliographies on ethnic-racial relations and education, Black theater, and the Brazilian Black Movement were consulted, as well as documentary sources made available for consultation by the Institute of Afro-Brazilian Studies and Research (IPEAFRO), the National Library, and interviews. As a result, given the absence of Black contributions in the history of theater in Brazil, one can observe the reproduction of racial stereotypes or the exclusion of Black people from theater scenes, especially during the period of slavery and the early 20th century. In a process of recovery, initiatives that invested in a shift in perceptions about Black subjectivities and presence in the arts were highlighted, presenting the work of Abdias Nascimento and the Experimental Black Theater, with their political and educational actions, as well as the contributions of Margarida and Solano Trindade to the Brazilian Popular Theater, another initiative created in the 20th century that sought dialogue between political and racial relations in the country. In presenting Black theater in Rio de Janeiro, the following aspects were addressed: an analysis of the main themes addressed in these productions, also featuring contributions from two spectators (one white and one Black) so they could offer their insights on Black theater in the city; an analysis of the production process of a play, in this case the show Marielle Presente, by Confraria do Impossível, accompanying some rehearsals and observing possible behind-the-scenes aspects relevant for reflection; and interviews with local artists to learn about their trajectories and perceptions as Black artists in Rio de Janeiro. The interviews complemented the analysis of the plays, as they brought to light personal and collective experiences that inspired/continue to inspire the emergence of certain elements present in Black theater in Rio. It was generally observed that Black theater has been an important avenue for political and educational communication in the city, through the plays, themes, and initiatives developed by artists. The importance of the artists' personal experiences for militant mobilization in the theater was also noted, including the cooperation of sympathetic white people active in the anti-racist struggle. However, many challenges remain in this sector, marked by racism that strongly influences the professional activities of these artists.
